About the Department

Overview

Food Engineering is a multidisciplinary field that integrates fundamental sciences, including chemistry, mathematics, physics, and biology, with engineering principles to address the production, processing, preservation, safety, quality, and distribution of food. Its scope extends from characterising raw materials and designing and optimising processes to product development, food safety and quality management, and efficient resource use.

Food engineers contribute to a wide range of activities within the food industry and related public institutions. Their professional roles include production planning and management, process design and optimisation, quality control and assurance, food safety management, product and process development, packaging, research and development (R&D), and other technical and managerial functions associated with food production systems.

Rapid advances in food science and technology continue to broaden the scope of the discipline. Current research encompasses biotechnology and nanotechnology applications, emerging processing and preservation technologies, novel product development, and advanced approaches to food safety. Sustainable production has also become an increasingly important dimension of food engineering, particularly in relation to the efficient use of food and natural resources, reduction of food loss and waste, and development of organic and minimally processed foods.

The curriculum of the Department of Food Engineering at Çankırı Karatekin University combines a strong foundation in science and engineering with contemporary developments in food science and technology. Undergraduate and graduate education is complemented by laboratory experience and research activities, providing students with opportunities to develop the analytical, technical, and problem-solving competencies required in a rapidly evolving global food sector.

History

The Department of Food Engineering was established within the Faculty of Engineering at Çankırı Karatekin University in 2010 and admitted its first undergraduate students in the 2012–2013 academic year. Graduate education began with the launch of the master’s programme in 2018, followed by the doctoral programme in 2023.

Since its establishment, the Department has expanded its educational and research activities at undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels. Its academic activities encompass diverse areas of food science and technology, combining education, scientific research, and engagement with contemporary challenges facing the food sector.

Mission

Our mission is to provide high-quality education and research opportunities informed by advances in science and technology; educate food engineers with strong analytical, research, and problem-solving competencies and a sound understanding of food safety, quality, sustainability, and professional ethics; and contribute to the food sector and society through scientific knowledge, research, and engineering solutions.

Vision

Our vision is to be a nationally and internationally recognised Department of Food Engineering distinguished by innovative and forward-looking research in food science and technology, contributions to digital and sustainable food technologies, strong academic and industrial partnerships, and graduates equipped to contribute effectively to the future of food engineering.
